News Release: Meewasin’s 46th Annual Clean Up Campaign Returns, Inviting Community to Take Action This Spring

SASKATOON – As the snow melts and reveals the impacts of winter, Meewasin Valley Authority is once again mobilizing the community through its annual Clean Up Campaign—now in its 46th year.

Running from Earth Day (April 22) through May 31, the Clean Up Campaign invites individuals, schools, families, and corporate teams to help restore the natural beauty of the Meewasin Valley and surrounding areas. What began as a simple call to action has grown into one of Saskatoon’s most impactful and enduring environmental initiatives.

The community is also invited to attend the official campaign kick-off event on April 22 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Meewasin Valley Authority Headquarters parking lot. The event will celebrate the start of the campaign and encourage residents to get involved in caring for the places we all share.

Each year, thousands of volunteers take part in the campaign, contributing their time and energy to care for shared public spaces. In 2025 alone, more than 2,800 participants contributed over 7,100 volunteer hours, removing more than 11,000 kilograms of waste from the landscape.

“The Clean Up Campaign is about more than collecting litter,” said Katie Walls, Volunteer and Community Events Coordinator at Meewasin Valley Authority. “It’s about building a sense of stewardship and pride in our shared spaces, and empowering people to take an active role in protecting the environment.”

The campaign plays a vital role in protecting the South Saskatchewan River corridor while advancing Meewasin’s broader mission to ensure conservation, culture, and community continue to thrive together. Through this initiative, participants directly contribute to:

  • Conservation of critical habitats and biodiversity
  • Environmental education for youth and families
  • Ongoing stewardship of Saskatchewan’s natural landscapes
  • Stronger, healthier communities
  • Increased awareness of sustainability and climate action

Participants are provided with supplies and resources to safely collect litter throughout the

Community members are encouraged to register and take part in this year’s campaign, and to join the kick-off event as the campaign gets underway.
