Join Meewasin on a guided wildflower walk at Beaver Creek Conservation Area, to learn about local plants, wildflowers, and pollinators that love them.
Did you know that somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants on the earth need help with pollination? As you hike along the trail, your guide will direct your attention to various native plants and wildflowers in bloom, and talk about the important relationships they have with the animals that pollinate them.
After your walk, you’ll be treated to a refreshing hand-made wildflower drink created by our pals at Primal Restaurant (featuring ingredients that wouldn’t exist without pollinators!). You will also have the opportunity to contribute to biodiversity by planting your own wildflower on site.
All proceeds from this experience support Meewasin’s conservation and education programs, making this a truly sustainable experience featuring the local flora and fauna of the Meewasin Valley.

What's Included in Your Pricing
- 2.5 hour experience led by a Meewasin guide.
- One cold handmade wildflower soda created by Primal Restaurant, featuring ingredients made possible by our pollinators.
- Magnifiers to borrow and all other equipment you might need to participate.
- We've got binoculars, microscopes, magnifying glasses and whisper guides for the hard of hearing.
- Transportation to and from Beaver Creek Conservation Area.
- Please bring a full water bottle to carry with you on the hike (there is no potable water at Beaver Creek).
- Please dress for the weather and come prepared to hike. Things like a hat, sunscreen, bug spray and proper outerwear will make your experience more enjoyable - and good footwear is a must!
- Beaver Creek Conservation Area is a natural habitat for ticks. Ticks will be present on site. Please do a thorough tick check at the end of your visit.
Guests can expect to walk 1-2 km on uneven and naturalized trail. Guests should expect to be outdoors and walking/standing for approximately 1.5 hours at a time. Due to the natural features of the trail network, this experience is not considered accessible for guests with limited mobility; however, if you have guests with limited mobility, please contact us to discuss our route and how we may be able to accommodate you.
Background
A microcosm of the Meewasin Valley, the Beaver Creek Conservation Area (BCCA) is located where a prairie creek meets a prairie river. The conservation area is 133 hectares in size. The creek, for which Beaver Creek Conservation Area is named, runs from the Brightwater Marsh area to the South Saskatchewan River. BCCA contains remnant sand hills that provide a unique habitat for grassland birds, wildflowers and home for numerous species at risk including the sand-dune reliant Smooth Goosefoot, and the ground nesting Common Nighthawk. One of a small number of uncultivated short-grass prairie areas preserved in Saskatchewan, the current site has been used as a nature park since 1913. Beaver Creek is rich in biodiversity and provides many valuable services to the ecosystem.
Directions
Beaver Creek Conservation Area is located approximately 13km south of Saskatoon. Starting on Lorne Avenue, take Highway 219 due south. After approximately 12km, you will see a sign reading, "Beaver Creek East" - do NOT turn here. Continue past this sign, approximately 1km, to a sign on the right reading, “Beaver Creek Conservation Area.” Turn right (west) and follow the winding road to the parking lot.

These guided excursions are an invitation to slow down and appreciate the intricate botanical diversity of the Meewasin Valley. Led by our full-time guide Kelton Braun, you will explore the vibrant and ever-changing native blooms of Saskatchewan native prairie.
How much physical activity is involved?
The Wildflower Walk is a gentle, interpretive experience conducted at a leisurely pace to allow for observation and photography. You can expect to be on your feet for approximately 60 to 90 minutes over varying prairie terrain.
What should I bring to enhance my experience?
We highly recommend bringing a camera or smartphone for macro photography, as well as a reusable water bottle. While our guides provide expert identification, feel free to bring your favorite botanical field guide or plant-ID app.
What is the recommended attire?
Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes are essential for navigating prairie grasses. We also recommend wearing long trousers, a hat, and sunscreen to ensure a comfortable experience under the Saskatchewan sun.
What happens if the weather is unfavorable?
Our walks proceed in most weather conditions, as the rain often brings out the vibrant scents and colors of the valley. In the event of extreme weather, we will contact all registered guests to discuss rescheduling or alternative arrangements.
