News Release: Saskatoon’s winter tradition returns: Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink @Nutrien Plaza open for the season

SASKATOON – The heart of downtown Saskatoon is about to get a little more festive. Meewasin is thrilled to announce that the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink @Nutrien Plaza is now open for the season.

Located in Kiwanis Memorial Park, adjacent to the historic Delta Bessborough Hotel, the rink has become a staple of winter life in the city. Access to the ice remains free for everyone, a feat made possible through the generous support of sponsors Cameco, Nutrien, and DTNYXE. While admission is free, donations are welcomed to help support continued operations.

"Nothing brings the warmth to winter in Saskatoon quite like ice skates and hot chocolate, so we are delighted to welcome the community back to the rink. Thanks to our partners, Cameco, Nutrien, DTNYXE, and the City of Saskatoon, we can ensure this cherished amenity remains accessible to everyone. Whether you’re learning to skate for the first time, executing a perfect triple toe loop, or just joining us for an event like Sip & Skate, we look forward to sharing the ice with you!," said Mike Velonas, CEO of Meewasin.

To celebrate the opening, we’re inviting the public to a special kick-off event on December 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Attendees can enjoy a festive atmosphere featuring free hot chocolate.

Hours of Operation and Weather Policy: Following the launch, the rink will operate on the following schedule:

  • Wednesday through Sunday: noon to 8 p.m.
  • Monday and Tuesday: Closed

Skaters are reminded that the rink is an outdoor facility and subject to Saskatchewan weather. Unscheduled closures may occur during extreme cold (wind chills of -31 C or lower) or heavy snowfall. For daily updates on ice conditions and status, please visit meewasin.com/skatingrink.

Looking Ahead to Sip & Skate 2026: The excitement continues into the new year with the return of Sip & Skate. This popular 19-plus event offers exclusive access to the rink accompanied by cozy wintry drinks and snacks. The first Sip & Skate of the season will be held in January. Stay tuned for dates.
