News Release - Hightlights of the Meewasin Board Meeting, May 1, 2009
May 1, 2009
- Meewasin approved:
- The application from the City of Saskatoon to remediate the slump on the east riverbank adjacent to Saskatchewan Crescent between the University Bridge and Eighteenth Street subject to replacement of the native forest habitat.
- The application from Saskatoon Light & Power to stabilize the riverbank, the location adjacent to St. Henry Avenue above Gabriel Dumont Park.
- Meewasin received the State of the Valley Report.
Since 1993 Meewasin has conducted a State of the Valley Report. It measures Meewasin’s stewardship of the natural and cultural heritage resources of the valley. The report is a result of an analysis of aerial photographs, inventories of the flora and fauna in the valley and an independent public opinion survey. Meewasin will hold a news conference in the near future for the purpose of releasing the report. - Yellow Fish Road Kick-off
The Yellow Fish Road Kick off will be this Saturday, May 2nd. The Girl Guides of Saskatoon will be painting selected storm drains in the City Park neighborhood between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. with yellow fish to remind Saskatoon residents that what goes in the storm drains goes directly into the river. The Guides will be leaving from Kinsmen Park to the City Park to paint the City Park storm drains at 12:45 p.m. The Girl Guide Yellow Fish Road badges will be presented by Trout Unlimited Canada at 3:00 p.m. in Kinsmen Park. For further information contact Guide Leader Heather Landine on site.
Since 1991, thousands of Canadian youth have participated in the Yellow Fish Road program, learning about their water supply and the impact their community has on the supply of clean water. Painting the storm drains with yellow fish and distributing fish shaped yellow brochures is a reminder of the importance of clean water and properly disposing of hazardous waste. With the support of Petro Canada, Meewasin is again partnering with the Girl Guides of Canada (Saskatoon, Brightwater, Trout Unlimited, Saskatoon schools and community groups) to promote the Yellow Fish Road program in Saskatoon and area. Kits, hangers, posters, the Yellow Fish Road song sheet music and CDs are being distributed to schools and community groups.
