News Release - Highlights of the Meewasin Board Meeting March 6, 2009
March 6, 2009
- Meewasin approved amendments to the South Downtown District Development Policy.
- The first amendment makes office space restrictions in the Meewasin Development Plan consistent with changes to city development controls.
The new policy shall read: “Office development will be limited to 30 percent of permitted gross floor area per site. The 30 percent limit may be exceeded, up to a total maximum of 100,000 ft2 per site, when it can be demonstrated that the development contains an appropriate mix of uses, in the context of the site itself and the mix of uses on sites nearby. Office uses are to be located above the first floor where possible.” - The second amendment is the introduction of a map so that development controls may be better understood within the context of land uses identified in the Meewasin Development Plan.
- Meewasin will hold two public open houses for the purpose of reviewing its activities and the outcomes of these activities on its goal of preserving the cultural and natural heritage of the river valley.
Background:
Every five years Meewasin undertakes a vigorous review of its activities and the outcomes these activities have in the valley. In 2008 this “State of the Valley” assessment helped Meewasin determine the effectiveness of its efforts to conserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Meewasin Valley. The results of this work are now ready to be shared with the community in two public opinion houses, a web survey on the Meewasin web-site (www.meewasin.com) and focus group sessions. The public open houses will be in the Meewasin Valley Centre (402 3rd Avenue South) boardroom on Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 from 5:00 – 8:00p.m.; and on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Meewasin is also accommodating requests for focus groups from individuals, recreational groups or clubs, and community associations.
