Meewasin Meters - Old parking meters getting a new life at Meewasin Valley Centre
August 27, 2008
Meewasin is installing seven bright blue "Meewasin Meters" around the Meewasin Valley Centre today. These meters have been revamped to accept coins only, and will give donors a "Thank You" message when coins are dropped in the meter. The meters were refurbished through a partnership with J.J. MacKay Canada Ltd, a world leading manufacturer of parking meters whose plant is situated in Nova Scotia.
Meewasin hopes that providing a fun way to make donations will give people another opportunity to support Meewasin and its work by dropping their loose coins into the meters. Contributions are voluntary, and the funds collected will help to support Meewasin's work - by supporting its conservation, development and education work in the river valley.
"The meters are designed to catch people's eye. We choose the bright blue colour so that they will stand out in all seasons" said Susan Lamb, Meewasin CEO. "The decals on the Meewasin meter were developed by our designers here at Meewasin. They give a very personalized look to the meters so people won't confuse them with parking meters. Once the Meewasin Meters are established, we will consider expanding the program to other areas of the valley."
Funds collected over the next few months will help complete the Cameco Riverfront Campaign. "Every dollar counts" says Campaign Chair Don Somers. "We are within $200,000 of our goal and installing these meters gives everyone a chance to be involved in the Campaign."
The Riverfront at River Landing is one of the most exciting riverbank projects in Saskatoon's history. The Riverfront extends along the west riverbank from the Victoria Bridge to the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge, will be a central focus for our City. The area brings people together in a unique combination of meeting place, performance site and recreation area - a place where nature and community meet.
