News Release - Meewasin's Cameco Riverfront Campaign announces Saskatchewan Watershed Authority
June 17, 2008
Dr. Donald Somers, Chair of the Cameco Riverfront Campaign for Meewasin, today announced that the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has contributed $10,000 to build a Children's River Basin Water Play feature. The Children's River Basin Water Play feature is a place for children and adults to learn about the Saskatchewan River Basin, its geography and its history. The area is a fully accessible amenity that provides a year-round artistic feature and a children’s play area on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.
"Making the entire play area a model of the Saskatchewan River Basin fits very well with
the watershed approach taken by Saskatchewan Watershed Authority," says Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Nancy Heppner. "We are pleased to support the campaign, and to help provide a place where our children can develop a better understanding of where their water comes from and of the many people, businesses and species that depend on the Saskatchewan Rivers."
"Meewasin extends sincere thanks to the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority for their leadership in supporting the Riverfront at River Landing," said Dr. Somers. "We encourage everyone to visit the Riverfront and enjoy the Children’s River Basin Water Play feature this summer."
This key feature of Riverfront at River Landing will provide a critical sense of place, highlighting Saskatoon in the broader watershed setting of the Saskatchewan River Basin. It teaches about our environment as it relates to the river system, nature, habitat, and both physical and political geography. It touches on the Rocky Mountains, the Precambrian shield and includes references to all Prairie Provinces and some major sites.
Designed to bring people and our community together, the Riverfront at River Landing integrates an urban plaza with an interpreted visitor experience unlike anywhere in the world. A combination of a public domain and business interest, the area will be tasteful, understated and timeless.
